Overview

Floor & Wall Tiling, explained

What it is

Floor and wall tiling covers preparing surfaces, planning the layout, cutting and fixing tiles, grouting and sealing. It applies to bathrooms, kitchens, hallways, living spaces and commercial areas.

Who it's for

Homeowners renovating a room, landlords replacing damaged tiling, and businesses that need hard-wearing, easy-clean surfaces.

When you need it

When tiles are cracked, loose or dated, when you're renovating a room, or when you want a durable surface in a high-traffic or wet area.

Why it pays to use a specialist

The difference between average and excellent tiling is in the preparation and planning. A flat substrate, full adhesive coverage and a layout planned from the centre of the room are what make tiling look deliberate and last.

The cost of getting it wrong

What happens when this is left or rushed

Badly laid tiles rarely fail all at once; they deteriorate tile by tile.

Hollow, loose tiles

Tiles fixed with dabs of adhesive instead of full coverage sound hollow and break under load.

Cracking

Tiles on an unprepared or moving surface crack along their length.

Lippage

Edges that don't sit flush catch the light and your feet.

Unbalanced layouts

Thin slivers at walls and doors make a room look poorly finished.

Common mistakes we're called in to fix

  • Tiling over an uneven or unstable surface.
  • Starting from one wall instead of planning the layout from the centre.
  • Using the wrong adhesive for large-format or natural stone tiles.
  • Skipping movement joints in larger floor areas.
  • Grouting too soon or choosing grout unsuited to the area.

In detail

Materials, methods and options for floor & wall tiling

Tile types

Porcelain is dense, hard-wearing and low-maintenance. Ceramic is lighter and well suited to walls. Natural stone offers unique character but needs sealing. Mosaics are ideal for curves, niches and wet-room floors.

Large-format tiles

Large tiles create a seamless look with fewer joints, but need a very flat surface and careful handling. They're less forgiving of poor preparation than smaller tiles.

Patterns and layouts

Straight lay, brick bond, herringbone and feature walls each suit different spaces. We'll plan the pattern around the room's focal points such as doors, windows and fittings.

Residential and commercial tiling

In homes, the focus is often on design and detail. In commercial spaces, durability and slip resistance come first. We tile across London and Surrey, including Clapham, Battersea, Wandsworth, Greenwich and Bromley.

What affects the cost of floor and wall tiling

No two projects are priced the same, which is why we don't publish fixed prices. The main factors are the area to be tiled, the tile size and material, how much preparation the walls and floors need, the layout or pattern, and the number of cuts around fittings, windows and corners. The condition of what's already there matters too: a sound, flat surface is quicker to work on than one that needs repairing or rebuilding first.

The free quote visit is where these factors become clear. Emanuele will explain what's driving the price, flag anything that could change it once work starts, and give you a written quote so you can compare like for like. Payments are then staged at 30% to book, 35% at halfway and 35% on completion, so your money follows the progress you can see.

Grout, silicone and long-term care

Grout fills the joints between tiles, but in corners and where tiles meet baths, trays and worktops, flexible silicone is used instead, because those junctions move slightly. Using grout where silicone belongs is a common reason for cracking in corners.

Keeping tiled surfaces in good shape is simple: clean regularly with a suitable cleaner, ventilate wet rooms, and deal with any cracked silicone promptly before water gets behind it. In bathrooms we install, grout or silicone failures caused by defective workmanship are covered by our 2-year workmanship warranty.

Why Tilermate

Why London homeowners choose Tilermate for floor & wall tiling

Emanuele Campoccia trained as a tiler in Italy from a young age and has more than 20 years of experience. Since 2014 he has worked across London and Surrey on homes and commercial properties, and he still leads every project personally. When you call, you speak to the person responsible for the result, not a call centre or a salesperson.

Customers consistently mention the same things in their Google reviews: attention to detail, professionalism, clear communication and a clean, precise finish. Those reviews average 5.0, and several describe Emanuele checking not only his own work but that everything else on the project was done correctly.

The commercial side is kept simple. Quotes are free and written. Payments are staged at 30% to book, 35% at the halfway point and 35% on completion, so you're never paying far ahead of the work. Tilermate Interiors Ltd carries public liability insurance of up to £5 million, and bathroom installations come with a 2-year workmanship warranty from handover.

We work Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm, on planned projects only. That focus means each job gets proper preparation and attention rather than being squeezed in between emergency call-outs.
