Overview

Kitchen Tiling & Splashbacks, explained

What it is

Kitchen tiling covers splashbacks behind worktops, hobs and sinks, and floor tiling across the kitchen and open-plan spaces.

Who it's for

Homeowners fitting a new kitchen, those refreshing an existing one, landlords updating rentals, and food businesses needing hygienic surfaces.

When you need it

When fitting new units and worktops, when splashbacks are stained or cracked, or when kitchen floors are worn.

Why it pays to use a specialist

Splashbacks have to fit precisely around worktops, sockets and window reveals, and floors must withstand heavy daily use. Poor cuts and weak joints let grease and water in.

The cost of getting it wrong

What happens when this is left or rushed

Kitchen tiling problems quickly turn into hygiene and maintenance problems.

Stained grout

Unsuitable grout behind the hob and sink absorbs grease and discolours.

Water behind the splashback

Poorly sealed edges at the worktop let water reach the wall and units.

Cracked floor tiles

Dropped pans and heavy traffic break tiles on poorly prepared floors.

Messy cuts

Uneven cuts around sockets and corners look unprofessional and trap dirt.

Common mistakes we're called in to fix

  • Tiling before worktops are fitted and templated.
  • Choosing porous tiles or grout behind the hob.
  • Not sealing where the splashback meets the worktop.
  • Using wall tiles on floors.
  • Not planning the layout around sockets and windows.

In detail

Materials, methods and options for kitchen tiling & splashbacks

Splashback options

Metro and brick-bond tiles give a classic look. Large-format porcelain or stone slabs create a seamless finish with fewer joints. Mosaics and patterned tiles make a feature behind the hob.

Kitchen floors

Porcelain is a practical choice for kitchen floors because it's dense, hard-wearing and resists stains. Natural stone suits period homes but needs sealing. Underfloor heating can be added under tiled kitchen floors.

Open-plan spaces

In open-plan layouts, the same floor tile often runs from kitchen into dining and living areas, which needs careful setting-out across the whole space.

Homes and food businesses

Commercial kitchens need surfaces suited to heavy cleaning and hygiene. We tile kitchens across London and Surrey, including Kensington, Marylebone, Herne Hill, Ealing and Cobham.

What affects the cost of kitchen tiling

No two projects are priced the same, which is why we don't publish fixed prices. The main factors are the size of the splashback or floor, the tile type and format, the number of cuts around sockets, windows and units, and whether floor tiling happens before or after units are fitted. The condition of what's already there matters too: a sound, flat surface is quicker to work on than one that needs repairing or rebuilding first.

The free quote visit is where these factors become clear. Emanuele will explain what's driving the price, flag anything that could change it once work starts, and give you a written quote so you can compare like for like. Payments are then staged at 30% to book, 35% at halfway and 35% on completion, so your money follows the progress you can see.

Coordinating with your kitchen fitter

Splashbacks are one of the last jobs in a kitchen fit, after units, worktops and appliances are in. Floors are best tiled before base units go in, or at least under where appliances will stand. If you're working with a separate kitchen company, we'll coordinate timing so the tiling isn't rushed and cuts around worktops and sockets are precise.

Sockets and switches often need to be moved or fitted with deeper back boxes to sit flush with the tiles. Planning this in advance avoids awkward gaps and covers that don't sit flat.

Choosing tiles that suit how you cook

If you cook often, glazed porcelain or ceramic behind the hob is easiest to keep clean. Natural stone and handmade tiles have character but need sealing and more care near heat and grease. Fewer grout lines mean less to clean, which is why larger formats are popular behind hobs and sinks.

Why Tilermate

Why London homeowners choose Tilermate for kitchen tiling & splashbacks

Emanuele Campoccia trained as a tiler in Italy from a young age and has more than 20 years of experience. Since 2014 he has worked across London and Surrey on homes and commercial properties, and he still leads every project personally. When you call, you speak to the person responsible for the result, not a call centre or a salesperson.

Customers consistently mention the same things in their Google reviews: attention to detail, professionalism, clear communication and a clean, precise finish. Those reviews average 5.0, and several describe Emanuele checking not only his own work but that everything else on the project was done correctly.

The commercial side is kept simple. Quotes are free and written. Payments are staged at 30% to book, 35% at the halfway point and 35% on completion, so you're never paying far ahead of the work. Tilermate Interiors Ltd carries public liability insurance of up to £5 million, and bathroom installations come with a 2-year workmanship warranty from handover.

We work Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm, on planned projects only. That focus means each job gets proper preparation and attention rather than being squeezed in between emergency call-outs.

FAQ

Kitchen Tiling & Splashbacks: your questions answered

Should splashbacks be tiled before or after the worktop?

After. Tiling sits on top of the worktop for a clean edge and proper seal.

Which grout is best behind a hob?

A stain-resistant grout suited to kitchens. We'll recommend one at quote stage.

Can you tile a kitchen floor without removing the units?

It depends on the layout and floor. Ideally floors are tiled before units go in.

How long does a splashback take?

Usually a short job, depending on size and tile type. You'll get a timeline with your quote.

Is kitchen tiling covered by your warranty?

How much will my project cost?

Every project is priced individually after a free visit, because size, materials and the condition of the existing room change the cost. You get a clear written quote before any work starts, with no obligation.

How do payments work?

30% deposit to book your start date, 35% when the job is halfway, and the final 35% on completion. You are never asked to pay far ahead of the work that has been done.

Are you insured?

Yes. Tilermate Interiors Ltd carries public liability insurance of up to £5 million.

Do you offer emergency call-outs?

No. We focus on planned renovation and installation work, Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm. That focus is what lets us give each project proper attention.
