Overview

Marble & Stone Installation, explained

What it is

Marble and natural stone installation means laying stone tiles or slabs on floors, walls, bathrooms and feature areas. Unlike porcelain, every piece of stone is different in colour, veining and thickness, and needs specific preparation, adhesive, handling and sealing.

Who it's for

Homeowners creating a luxury bathroom, hallway or kitchen floor; owners of period and high-end homes where stone suits the character; and commercial clients wanting a premium front-of-house finish.

When you need it

When you're renovating and want a timeless, high-value finish, or when existing stone has cracked, stained, lost its seal or was poorly laid in the first place.

Why it pays to use a specialist

Marble is softer and more porous than porcelain. It can stain from the wrong adhesive, crack on an unprepared or flexing floor, and show uneven lippage under side light. Installing it well takes experience, and mistakes are expensive because stone is costly to replace.

The cost of getting it wrong

What happens when this is left or rushed

Poorly installed stone loses its value quickly, and the damage is often permanent.

Staining and discolouration

Some stones react to unsuitable adhesives or moisture, leaving marks that come through the surface and can't be cleaned off.

Cracks from movement

Stone laid on a flexing timber floor or uneven base cracks along its veins.

Uneven edges

Stone that isn't levelled carefully shows lippage between tiles, catching light and feet.

Etching and wear

Unsealed or wrongly maintained marble dulls and etches from everyday spills and cleaning products.

Common mistakes we're called in to fix

  • Treating marble like ceramic and using the same adhesive and method.
  • Laying stone without first blending the tiles for colour and veining.
  • Skipping sealing, or sealing before the stone has been cleaned properly.
  • Choosing polished marble for wet floors where it becomes slippery.
  • Not stiffening timber floors before laying heavy stone.

Our process

    Visit & advice

We look at the space and help you choose a stone and finish suited to how the area will be used.

    Substrate preparation

Floors and walls are made flat, stable and suitable for the weight and type of stone.

  3. Step 3

    Dry lay & blend

Stone is laid out first so veining and colour flow naturally across the area.

  4. Step 4

    Installation

Each piece is fully bedded and levelled, with cuts and edges planned carefully.

  5. Step 5

    Seal & handover

Stone is cleaned and sealed, and you're given care advice to keep it looking its best.

In detail

Materials, methods and options for marble & stone installation

Types of stone

Marble is prized for its veining and elegance. Limestone and travertine offer softer, warmer tones. Slate and granite are harder and more hard-wearing. Each has different porosity, strength and upkeep needs.

We'll explain the trade-offs so you choose a stone that suits both the look you want and how the space is used.

Finishes: polished, honed and textured

Polished stone reflects light and shows off the veining, but is more slippery when wet and shows scratches more readily. Honed stone has a matt, smooth finish that's more forgiving and safer underfoot. Textured or brushed finishes add grip.

Floors, walls and bathrooms

Stone floors need a stable, flat base. Wall installations must account for weight and fixings. In bathrooms, stone needs proper waterproofing behind it and regular sealing. Any bathroom installation we carry out is covered by our 2-year workmanship warranty.

Stone pairs well with underfloor heating, which takes the chill off the surface.

Residential and commercial stone

In homes, stone is often used in bathrooms, hallways and kitchens in areas such as Mayfair, Belgravia, Knightsbridge, Holland Park and Hampstead.

In commercial spaces, stone makes a strong first impression in reception areas, with the right finish and maintenance to cope with footfall.

What affects the cost of marble and stone installation

No two projects are priced the same, which is why we don't publish fixed prices. The main factors are the type and finish of stone you choose, the size and thickness of the tiles or slabs, the area being covered, how much substrate preparation is needed, and the complexity of the layout, cuts and edge details. The condition of what's already there matters too: a sound, flat surface is quicker to work on than one that needs repairing or rebuilding first.

The free quote visit is where these factors become clear. Emanuele will explain what's driving the price, flag anything that could change it once work starts, and give you a written quote so you can compare like for like. Payments are then staged at 30% to book, 35% at halfway and 35% on completion, so your money follows the progress you can see.

Caring for marble and stone

Marble and limestone are calcium-based, so acidic liquids such as lemon juice, wine and some bathroom cleaners can etch the surface. Wipe spills promptly, use pH-neutral cleaners made for natural stone, and avoid abrasive pads. In bathrooms, a squeegee after showering reduces water marks and mineral build-up.

Sealing doesn't make stone waterproof, but it slows absorption and gives you time to clean before marks set. How often to reseal depends on the stone and how heavily the area is used. We'll give you specific care advice for your stone when we hand the work over.

The commercial side is kept simple. Quotes are free and written. Payments are staged at 30% to book, 35% at the halfway point and 35% on completion, so you're never paying far ahead of the work. Tilermate Interiors Ltd carries public liability insurance of up to £5 million, and bathroom installations come with a 2-year workmanship warranty from handover.

We work Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm, on planned projects only. That focus means each job gets proper preparation and attention rather than being squeezed in between emergency call-outs.
